A lot of things about the smart home technology are really quite enticing, but if the home you live in isn’t actually yours, you may not feel free to explore much with smart home gadgets. I mean, you wouldn’t want to change a thermostat or light switch and end up going against your lease agreement and getting your landlord pissed off.
However, the good thing is that there are still a number of ways that renters can take very good advantage of the smart home technology. You only have to know the right gadgets to have.
Plug-and-play all the way
Living in a rented apartment means that there is a good possibility that you cannot change things like thermostats, light switches and door locks. It’s okay; there are still numerous ways you can get your living space smartened up.
Obviously, you should start by going with gadgets that you can make use of without any necessary installation. There are a loads of tech that fall under this category, such as Google home speakers, Smart switches that can get your appliances and lamps automated, and Wi-Fi cameras.
Using a smart switch for automating something like a space heater or air conditioner can be an awesome compromise if you can’t upgrade to a smart thermostat because your landlord won’t let you. Just make sure you look for devices that have physical controls on them that you can leave at settings you choose. When a smart switch turns on and off, it’s just the same as plugging your appliance and unplugging it. You want something that will fire back to the setting you want, without the need for an additional input.
Mind you, it’s not a necessary that these kinds of plug-and-play solutions have plugs. If you can’t swap the deadbolt out and you want to smarten up your door lock, you can go with something that sits over top of the existing deadbolt, like the August Smart Lock or the Kwikset Convert. And connected LEDs from names like Lifx, and Philips Hue offer easy, rental-friendly screw-in smarts, especially if swapping out your light switches isn’t an option.
